Usages

The Association stressed that its seals should be used on correspondence but should not be used on the front or back of envelopes.   These directions seem to have been  followed by most but, as in all of life, there are those souls who decide to "Do it My Way"  (see covers below)

The earliest use of a seal on correspondence in my collection is dated 1912 and uses a Type III coil seal (perf 10.7 left, 10.9 right).

This 1914 receipt uses a Type IV seal.

This 1915 price quote has a seal, similar to Type IV, preprinted on the letterhead.

This correspondence from 1914 has a Type IIa seal.

This envelope dated Jan 10, 1917 not only has a seal on the front, but is short paid 1¢.  A REAL protest cover without any sign that the shortage was noted and postage due was charged.   (The 1917 date is visible on the lower left corner of the seal and near the lower right corner of the 1¢ stamp.)

The only usage on cover I have of the "2/3 Your Letter Postage is a Tax" seal is dated Dec  3 1919 nearly six months after the repeal of the 3¢ First Class rate and the return of the 2¢ rate.  A case for frugality... using the seals already on hand.
